junkyard art supplies: david buckingham

buck_color_stud30.gif

artist david buckingham creates these pop art wall pieces with lush found color. what is found color? well, he sources painted metal from scrap yards and junk piles -then constructs these gorgeous steel assemblages. he wouldn't call them paintings, but that's how they read to our eyes. his collection of work holds some wonderfully bold pieces with strong political and social statements, like the one below.

for more of his very interesting and provocative work, take a look at his portfolio here.

spirit guides: tiffany bozic

2006-Untitled3.jpg

late at night, i stumbled through the buzzing chambers of the internet. blog led to blog until i had lost my way completely. then i landed on this image and stopped. just stopped and soaked it in. tiffany bozic, painting magical narratives with layers of mystery. i am spellbound by the stork and the red fox. two animals that come to me in dreams, over and over. i've come to see them as my spirit guides, my personal totems. this painting really speaks deeply to me. i want it. the feeling grows: that i could live with this painting forever and still be fed by it's stories. please do go dig into her whole portfolio of riches right here.

you won't regret it, i promise.

sending grace across the miles

DSCF4309.JPG

my oldest friend, from way back in high school, asked me to make her a nceklace. she tried to hire me for the job, but i insisted on making this a gift. you see, she's gone through a long illness, a rare disease, that threatened her very life. she spent many months in the hospital and is now finally on the road to abundant health. grace, she said, sums up what got her through that very dark and painful time.

grace is what she wants to keep close, as she lets go of all the toxic stuff from being ill.

so inside the oval of silver, resting over her healing heart and lungs, is the word grace. when she looks down at the necklace she will be able to see that word shining back at her, a simple reminder. i am so honored to be part of the celebration of her life and good health.

cheers, my friend. may this token bring you comfort and joy.

machine for every season: leo cahn

 m_vinring2.JPGm_vinring3.JPG

check out this charming and whimsical fan ring by leo cahn. i'm thinking just as soon as the hot weather finally hits the pacific northwest (and it will, right?) i am going to need one of these! you simply must go explore his website. it's full of quirky treasures and magical machines, right here. i also just adore the little "floche" piece below, the perfect combination of precise, precious and joyful. it's rare to find an artist who's ideas know no bounds by materials or technology. thanks to the amazingly resourceful eye at the carrotbox blog for the link.

the story of sand

MauiPieces-web%20copy.jpg

can you believe these beautiful objects are grains of sand? photographed through a microscope by artist gary greenberg, they are fantastic images. oh, the tiny beauties in this world we brush off our feet at the end of a day at the beach! you can view a large collection of the images here and read more about his body of microscopic images here.

thanks to one of my very favorite bloggers, kirsty hall, at up all night again, for the link.

A blog housekeeping note. I've finally cleaned up my categories in the side bar, so now you can browse by subject and by (organized) month. The search feature is pretty fun, too. And, in case you haven't noticed yet, I've also added a few new sections on the bottom of the navigation bar. a food for thought section, with books I'm either currently reading or have found thought-provoking in the past. a films that inspire me section, with the films that have color and light( and perhaps a story too) that haunt me. and last, a what i'm listening to in my studio section, with the albums in most recent heavy rotation listed. I hope you enjoy them!
